Hednesford Mining Memorial: Planning Delay |
|
Tony Wright MP, Chair of CHAPS (Chase Arts for Public Spaces), has announced that the proposed dedication of a memorial to the area’s mining past has had to be postponed. The dedication service was due to have taken place on 6th November but the group has met with some hitches with their planning application and feel now that they will be unable to meet their original timetable. The memorial, which will comprise of a representation of a miner’s lamp and bricks inscribed with the names of former miners, is to be sited in Hednesford town centre. There are some outstanding planning issues to be resolved before they get the go-ahead. Once this is given, the group is confident that erection of the memorial will take only a month or so. Speaking
after last Friday’s meeting of CHAPS, “We thought it better to postpone the dedication event now rather than give ourselves an impossibly tight schedule to meet. The planning hurdles are not at all insurmountable and we hope that we will be in a position to start construction work before the end of the year and then hold a special dedication event in the early spring.” The memorial is supported by public subscription, with families and individuals purchasing bricks inscribed with a miner’s name at £10 each. For details of the buy-a-brick scheme, please call Jack Sunley – 01543 424303. |
