Fireworks: MP’s Call for Review of Impact of New
Regulations |
|
Tony Wright
MP is assessing the impact of new fireworks regulations, limiting the sale and
use of fireworks, to see if further measures are needed to address the nuisance
they can cause. He feels that a review of recent regulations would help to
clarify whether further action is necessary. He said: “I
have been trying to assess whether the fireworks menace this year has been
reduced because of the new regulations. Some people tell me that it has, and my
own impression is that there has been some improvement, but others tell
different stories. There
clearly needs a proper review of what happened this year, as a basis for
deciding on any further action, particularly on noise limits Nearly
a fortnight after Bonfire Night, fireworks are still exploding all around the
place. This certainly makes me annoyed, but my wife tells me that I should be
more tolerant and remember what we did when our children were small. It would be
a shame if we did have to end something that has been a family tradition for so
long, just because of the anti-social behaviour of some, but I do not rule this
out. If
we settled for organised displays only, the Government might well be accused of
always wanting to ban things, whereas other people see this as the only way to
stop this problem once and for all. It is difficult to get the balance right,
but in relation to fireworks I do think we may well have to go further than the
measures that have already been introduced.” |

Sylvia Heal
MP Returns to Rugeley |
|
Sylvia
Heal MP, a Deputy Speaker in the House of Commons, is making a return visit to
Rugeley this Friday (25th November) when she is guest speaker at the
Annual Dinner of Sylvia Heal won a sensational by-election victory in 1990 to win the Mid Staffordshire parliamentary constituency (as it was called then) which included Rugeley. She held the seat until the General Election in 1992. “We are delighted that Sylvia Heal is making this return visit to Rugeley. Although she represented the town for only a short period she is still remembered with huge affection and respect by everybody, and her sensational by-election victory put Rugeley at the centre of the national political map. Her visit on Friday will be an occasion to share some very happy personal and political memories.” |
